Investigative actions at the residence of a Congresswoman

The US Department of Justice announced that a search was conducted at the home of Ilhan Omar, a member of the House of Representatives from the Democratic Party, in Washington. These measures were carried out as part of a criminal investigation.

According to Reuters, part of the investigative actions was aimed at verifying immigration documents. According to sources, these documents were processed by the congresswoman's late father when she was still a child.

Timeline and possible reasons

The search took place on Monday, 12 October. This date is significant, as only 22 days remain until the November midterm elections. The results of these votes will determine the balance of power in Congress for the next two years.

The exact purpose of the criminal investigation has not been officially disclosed. However, Fox News, citing its own sources, stated that the search is related to the verification of possible fraud in immigration documents.

A BBC crew saw several agents outside Omar's house carrying boxes out of the congresswoman's home and loading them into a van.

Congresswoman's reaction

Ilhan Omar reacted to the event on her social media. She called the search "an attempt [by the US authorities] to persecute political opponents and use federal law enforcement agencies as a tool of political struggle".

"For ten years, Trump has been persecuting me, spreading baseless lies and launching campaigns to discredit me, — Omar wrote in her post. — This is just another turn in his campaign of political intimidation. They will not succeed in silencing me".

Political context and biography

Ilhan Omar is the first American of Somali descent elected to the House of Representatives. She represents the 5th congressional district of Minnesota, which includes the city of Minneapolis. She has been in Congress since 2018. Two years ago, she was re-elected, receiving 74% of the vote.

Omar's political career has been accompanied by conflict with US President Donald Trump, whom she openly criticises, as well as with the Israeli authorities. Trump, in turn, allows himself sharp and provocative statements directed at the congresswoman, mostly concerning her origin. Omar's family fled Somalia to the US in 1995.
