Surgical procedure completed successfully

The Press Office of the Holy See officially announced that Pope Leo XIV successfully underwent surgery to remove a nodule in his lung. According to the Vatican's official statement, the surgical procedure was completed on time and in line with medical expectations. Following the procedure, the pontiff has already returned to his room.

Details of hospitalisation and preparation

On 13 October, it was reported that Leo XIV left the Vatican and travelled to Rome's Gemelli Clinic. Accompanied by his personal physician, Luigi Carbone, the Pope was prepared for the scheduled operation. According to RaiNews, the surgery was likely performed by Professor Stefano Margaritora. He heads the thoracic surgery department at this medical facility and is a specialist in minimally invasive techniques.

Separate apartments on the tenth floor and a specially equipped operating theatre were prepared for the Pope's stay at the clinic.

Changes to the schedule of public appearances

To ensure proper post-operative recovery, the Vatican has cancelled all public audiences of Leo XIV until 20 October. It remains to be seen whether the Pope will be able to participate in the Sunday Angelus prayer scheduled for 18 October.

Prayer for the pontiff's health

On the evening of 13 October, a Rosary prayer for the health of the Pope will be held in the chapel of Gemelli Clinic. This religious service will be led by Cardinal Baldassare Reina, Vicar of the Diocese of Rome.
