Vatican confirms cancer diagnosis
The Vatican has officially announced that Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer. According to the official bulletin, the pontiff was found to have adenocarcinoma, a common form of the disease. Laboratory test results on tissue samples obtained during the surgical procedure confirmed the doctors' initial suspicions, which arose during early examinations.
Surgical procedure was successful
On 14 October 2026, the 71-year-old head of the Catholic Church was hospitalised at a medical facility in Rome. The primary purpose of his hospital stay was to perform an operation to remove a tumour detected during a recent routine medical check-up.
It is noted that surgeons removed part of the Pope's right lung. The procedure lasted approximately 90 minutes and concluded successfully, with no complications arising.
Patient's condition is stable
Following the completion of the operation, the Pope regained consciousness. He was subsequently returned to his hospital room, where he continues to rest and recover.
