Involvement of deported children in military operations

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated during a special panel dedicated to Ukraine at the 30th Ibero-American Summit that Russia has begun involving Ukrainian children, whom it abducted during the full-scale war, in its army.

According to the head of state, the abduction of Ukrainian children is not only a crime against their families. Russia is using this policy, the consequences of which may manifest directly on the battlefield.

Efforts to return children

Zelensky emphasised that Ukraine continues to work on returning children that Russia has illegally deported or is holding in temporarily occupied territories. Foreign partners are also being involved in this process.

«Кожне повернення потребує значної роботи», – наголосив президент. ("Every return requires significant work," the president emphasised.)

He explained that first, it is necessary to find the child, verify information about them, and achieve their return. Meanwhile, Russia is resisting this process.

Statistics and international support

According to data released by Zelensky on 5 November, Ukraine has managed to return 2,790 children out of more than 20,000 abducted by Russia.

The International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children is also continuing to expand. Panama, Switzerland, and Cyprus have joined it.
