Address to Russian counterpart

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband had a sharp conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a G20 diplomats' meeting. The British official directly named Russia the aggressor and emphasised the futility of its military efforts.

Reference to tragedy in Dnipro

During his speech, Miliband focused attention on the consequences of recent attacks. He addressed Lavrov with the following words:

«Давайте поговоримо про те, що сталося вчора на залізниці у Дніпрі. Лише вчора ваші дрони атакували та вбили 15 людей» (Let's talk about what happened yesterday at the railway in Dnipro. Just yesterday your drones attacked and killed 15 people), — the British minister stressed.

According to him, this incident is just one of many examples of civilian deaths during the nearly five years of the full-scale invasion.

Call for pressure on Moscow

Miliband called on the international community to increase pressure on the Russian capital and deprive Vladimir Putin of the financial resources that allow him to continue, in his words, "this barbaric war".

The British politician emphasised that Moscow's initial strategy of a quick victory had not materialised. «Путін тоді думав, що легко переможе у цій війні. Але ви не перемагаєте. Завдяки мужності українського народу та солідарності країн за цим столом ви не перемагаєте» (Putin then thought he would easily win this war. But you are not winning. Thanks to the bravery of the Ukrainian people and the solidarity of the countries at this table, you are not winning), — the head of the UK Foreign Office stated.

Appeal to Lavrov's conscience

In addition, Miliband urged Sergey Lavrov to find the courage to tell the truth to the Russian dictator.

«Якби у вас вистачило сміливості говорити правду і чинити правильно, ви сказали б Путіну, що він не перемагає у цій війні й не переможе» (If you had the courage to tell the truth and do the right thing, you would tell Putin that he is not winning this war and will not win), — he added.
