Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky put forward a proposal for direct contact with Russian dictator Volodymyr Putin. According to the Ukrainian president, Turkey should be the venue for such a meeting. He expressed hope that the President of the Republic of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, would help organise the negotiations.

The role of the Turkish leader in organising talks

Volodymyr Zelensky emphasised that Kyiv is fully ready to implement this initiative. He drew attention to the fact that personal ties exist between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Volodymyr Putin, which is why Ukraine supports the idea of holding the meeting specifically in Turkey.

«Ми готові до цієї зустрічі в Туреччині. Я знаю, що президент Ердоган має свої зв'язки з Путіним. Тому ми підтримуємо зустріч в Туреччині» (We are ready for this meeting in Turkey. I know that President Erdogan has his own ties with Putin. Therefore, we support a meeting in Turkey), stressed the head of the Ukrainian state.

The need for personal dialogue

According to the President of Ukraine, there are key aspects of the conflict that cannot be resolved at the level of diplomatic delegations or technical working groups. That is why, in his view, direct communication between the top representatives of both sides is necessary.

«Саме тому я хочу зустрітися з ним як з людиною, яка приймає рішення» (That is why I want to meet him as the decision-maker), explained Volodymyr Zelensky, justifying his position on the need for a personal meeting with Volodymyr Putin.
