Former Director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, General David Petraeus, expressed high regard for the competence of Kyrylo Budanov, who now heads the Office of the President of Ukraine. According to the American general, Budanov's key strengths are his candour and ability to provide direct analysis of the battlefield situation. These traits, Petraeus said, contribute to a deeper understanding of the course of the war and processes on the battlefield.
These comments were made on the SpyCast podcast, which was published on 27 October. During the conversation, the former CIA Director shared his own impressions from meetings with Budanov and commented on his move to the new position.
"I know General Budanov quite well. I usually met with him every time I was in the country, and I greatly valued his assessments. He is quite direct and very candid," — noted Petraeus. (I know General Budanov quite well. I usually met with him every time I was in the country, and I greatly valued his assessments. He is quite direct and very candid.)
According to the American general, such a straightforward approach to analysis is critically important for understanding the complex military situation and the dynamics of combat operations.
Petraeus recalled his first conversation with Budanov, which took place via video link. The then-head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence was not in his office but in the area near the border with Russia, where he personally oversaw the execution of one of the military operations.
The American general emphasised that Budanov's appointment as head of the Presidential Office is evidence of a high level of trust in him by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
At the same time, Petraeus does not believe that this personnel change itself has significantly altered the operational or strategic situation. In his view, the main significance of this appointment lies in the fact that a person with a deep understanding of the military situation and practical experience in conducting combat operations is now working alongside the president.
