Russian oil carriers are implementing unconventional methods to protect their vessels from attacks by Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles. Car tyres, metal structures and nets have begun to be mounted on the sides of tankers, serving as improvised armour.
Statistics on Bosphorus transits
According to data published by maritime analyst Yuruk Isik, at least 60 vessels equipped with similar protective elements have passed through the Bosphorus Strait since August this year. Almost the entire flotilla is under sanctions from the United States and other Western countries, as it is used for the export of Russian oil.
Protection mechanics and expert assessment
Experts note that the installation of such structures is being carried out hastily with the aim of covering the most vulnerable areas of the hull. In particular, car tyres are hung along the sides of the vessels to make it more difficult for drones to hit targets.
Economic pressure context
The WSJ notes that such measures are part of a broader Ukrainian campaign aimed at economic pressure on Russia. The vulnerability of the so-called "shadow fleet" creates risks for Russian oil exports and the financial system that provides insurance for these vessels.
It is worth noting that the Black Sea has become the most dangerous region for commercial shipping this year. According to maritime organisations, over 570 vessels have been attacked, resulting in the deaths of 40 seafarers.
