Strengthening the security perimeter

Vladimir Putin's residence at Valdai has received an additional layer of security. Research into fresh satellite imagery has established that another ring of air defence towers has been constructed around the facility. Surface-to-air missile systems of the "Pantsir" or "Tor" types have been recorded within a 50-kilometre radius of the residence.

Strategic placement of systems

The new ring of air defence systems effectively intersects the so-called "backup airfield" of the Russian president, located in Khotilovo, as well as a secret bio-laboratory on Lisyachy Island. The analyst noted that one of the "outer ring" towers was installed back in March 2026 directly on the territory of the Khotilovo military base. It is known that the head of the Kremlin uses this facility quite frequently.

Additional air defence positions have appeared on the shores of the Vishnevolyetskoye Reservoir. On Lisyachy Island, located in the middle of the water body, Russian military personnel have built a new laboratory complex. It is likely linked to a biological weapons development programme.

Context of accusations and demographic aspect

In January 2026, Russian military claimed that Ukraine allegedly attempted to attack the Valdai residence with drones. Kyiv rejected these accusations. Both independent experts and the US Central Intelligence Agency expressed doubts about the credibility of this version.

In addition to Vladimir Putin himself, Alina Kabaeva, who is considered the mother of his two sons, spends a significant amount of time at the residence. It is also noted that nannies from Western countries have been hired for the Russian president's children.

In total, over 50 air defence positions have currently been detected around Valdai. This number is approximately half the number of similar facilities constructed in Moscow and the Moscow region after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Meanwhile, the capital region is home to over 20 million people, whereas in Valdai, the Valdai district, and within a 50-kilometre radius of them, there are fewer than 100,000 people.
