Suspect handed over for medical examination
France's National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office (PNAT) announced that the man suspected of carrying out a fatal attack using firearms near Paris has been taken out of custody. He has been placed under the supervision of psychiatrists for a health assessment. This was reported by BBC, citing data from the prosecutor's office.
Circumstances of the incident
The tragedy occurred on Friday. The attacker opened fire while driving a car. He initially shot in the town of Trapp before moving to the neighbouring La Verrière. One person was killed in the attack, and five others were injured.
It appears that the perpetrator targeted people of migrant origin.
Government reaction and investigation details
French President Emmanuel Macron described the attack as a "racist terrorist act". He added that the targets were people because of their skin colour or religion.
French media report that the suspect is 39-year-old Kevin T. He will remain under medical supervision until it is determined whether his mental state allows for the continuation of interrogations. The duration of such a procedure must not exceed 48 hours.
Prosecutors also stated that traces of cannabis and cocaine were detected in the suspect's system.
Findings at the residence
Newspaper Le Monde and news agency AFP, citing a source close to the investigation, reported that a Bible, a Quran, and a copy of Adolf Hitler's book "Mein Kampf" were found in the suspect's home.
