The state "Centre for the Protection of Ukraine's Information Space" has announced a tender for the production of a six-episode mini-series titled "Winged Lions". The film will tell the story of the Ukrainian Galician Army (UHA) and events of 1914–1921, including the UHA's military aviation.
Financing details
According to the state procurement system Prozorro, the total cost of the project is UAH 47.55 million. It is planned that half of this amount will be financed from the state budget.
The tender documentation states that the project is being implemented within the framework of President Volodymyr Zelensky's initiative to create Ukrainian cultural products.
Expenditure against the backdrop of military needs
The cost of producing the series has already been compared with the prices of air defence assets. The "Ukrainski Novyny" agency notes that for UAH 47.55 million, it would have been possible to purchase approximately 1,130 P1-SUN interceptor drones, which are used to neutralise "Shaheds".
For the amount planned to be allocated from the state budget, it would have been possible to procure around 565 such unmanned aerial vehicles.
Historical context
The Ukrainian Galician Army was established in 1918 as the armed forces of the West Ukrainian People's Republic (WUPR). In 1918–1919, it fought against Poland for control over Eastern Galicia.
After the defeat in the war with the Poles, the UHA merged with the army of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UPR) and took part in battles against the Bolsheviks and the White Guards. However, in November 1919, the UHA command concluded an alliance with the White Guard army of General Anton Denikin.
In February 1920, part of the UHA switched sides to the Bolsheviks. The army was renamed the Red Ukrainian Galician Army. However, this alliance proved to be short-lived: in April, two of the three Galician brigades left the Red Army. Subsequently, the Ukrainian Galician Army ceased to exist altogether.
