Demographic changes in the western direction
Lviv has significantly closed the gap with the capital in terms of the number of permanent residents. According to aggregated data from state agencies cited by Forbes, the city's population has increased to 986,000. This allowed Lviv to overtake Dnipro, where 975,000 people currently live, and Odesa, which has 907,000 residents. It is worth noting that Odesa previously belonged to the club of Ukraine's million-plus cities.
Growth dynamics in recent years
Compared to 2019, when Lviv had 687,000 residents, the demographic increase amounted to almost 300,000 people. The situation in the capital, Kyiv, remains dominant: it has 3.793 million inhabitants. The share of Kyiv residents in the country's total population has grown from 9.9% in 2019 to 13.3% in 2025.
Trends in other regions
Positive demographic dynamics are observed not only in Lviv. The number of residents has increased in Rivne (286,000), Lutsk (277,000), Chernivtsi (270,000) and Uzhhorod (127,000).
Overall, a growth in the population share is recorded in the western oblasts. For example, in Lviv Oblast, this indicator rose from 6.1% to 8.3%, in Zakarpattia Oblast — from 2.5% to 3.2%, and in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast — from 3% to 3.1%.
On the opposite side of the country, the situation is different. In the eastern regions, the population share is decreasing due to migration processes and the consequences of hostilities. The sharpest decline has been recorded in Donetsk Oblast, where the indicator fell from 5.3% to 0.8%.
General assessment of the country's population
The total population of Ukraine is currently estimated to be in the range of 28 to 31.4 million people.
