The head of the Georgian government, Irakli Kobakhidze, expressed sharp criticism of the European Union's annual package of documents dedicated to the enlargement process. According to him, these materials state that Georgia's accession process to the EU remains de facto suspended.
European Commission report lacks factual basis
Commenting on the publication of the report, Kobakhidze emphasised that it contains no justified criticism of Tbilisi. The Prime Minister underlined that the document is not "sharp" in the sense of containing convincing arguments, as no remark is supported by substantial evidence.
(This is not a sharp report. It would be sharp if it were based on facts. There is no sharpness in this report, as no remark is supported by substantial arguments. On the contrary, this report turned out to be sharp for its own authors, as they failed to present any justified claim), Kobakhidze emphasised.
Reaction to proposals regarding judges
The Prime Minister paid particular attention to Brussels' recommendations, which stipulate that Georgia must ensure a decisive role for international experts in the appointment of judges of ordinary courts and members of the High Council of Justice. Kobakhidze called such demands "shameful".
(We see to what level the European bureaucracy has fallen. When it comes to judges being appointed from abroad, this confirms what we have been saying all along: the European bureaucracy does not understand the significance of the rule of law, democracy and constitutionalism, and therefore makes such proposals. I want to say, this is simply shameful), the head of government stated.
