Personal gains drove Washington's position

US diplomat Anthony Gardner, who served as US Ambassador to the EU from 2014 to 2017, commented on the current situation in a conversation with Anton Borkovsky, host of the "Studio Zakhid" programme. According to him, Donald Trump believed the arguments of the Russian dictator and his entourage, who claimed that cooperation with Russia would bring significant personal and commercial dividends.

«Трамп піддався переконанням Путіна та його оточення, що він і його родина можуть отримати значно більшу вигоду від домовленостей із Росією — скажімо, завдяки спільним комерційним проєктам у Росії та іншим зв’язкам. Це трагічно» (Trump succumbed to the persuasion of Putin and his entourage that he and his family could gain significantly more benefit from agreements with Russia — for example, through joint commercial projects in Russia and other connections. This is tragic), Gardner emphasised.

Limited resources and air defence status

The diplomat acknowledged that the last few months have been an exceptionally difficult period for Ukraine. Having friends and relatives in various cities across the country, he closely monitors the consequences of Russian attacks. Gardner drew attention to the acute shortage of air defence systems, particularly the insufficient level of protection against ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones.

Meanwhile, according to the former ambassador, Washington continues to pass intelligence data to Kyiv, and the operation of the Starlink network has already been restored. However, US capabilities to provide military aid remain limited, particularly due to a shortage of interceptor missiles for Patriot systems linked to events in the Middle East.

Chances of a policy shift after elections

Despite the difficult circumstances, Gardner urged Ukrainians not to lose hope. He is convinced that the majority of Americans and a significant part of Congress continue to support Ukraine. A key factor in changing the situation could be the midterm elections to the US Congress.

If the Democrats regain control of both chambers of the legislature or at least the House of Representatives, they will gain leverage over the allocation of the state budget. This will provide them with a tool to pressure the Trump administration to increase funding for Ukraine's defence.

«Якщо демократи повернуть собі контроль над обома палатами конгресу або хоча б над Палатою представників, це може суттєво змінити ситуацію» (If the Democrats regain control of both chambers of Congress or at least the House of Representatives, it could significantly change the situation), the diplomat added.

Gardner concluded that political changes in the US could open new opportunities for continuing support for Kyiv, so one should not give up.
