Unconventional approach to animal search

British search and rescue specialists developed a non-standard strategy to assist the four-legged animal. To lead the frightened creature out of the hazardous area, they decided to use an unmanned aerial vehicle with a sausage attached to it.

Circumstances of Millie's disappearance

The incident occurred on 13 January near the coast in Harwich, United Kingdom. During a walk, a three-year-old Jack Russell terrier named Millie slipped off her leash. The animal fled to the local marshes, where it became trapped and was unable to escape on its own.

Millie was only found the following day. She was spotted on a coastal sandbar, but reaching the dog proved to be an extremely difficult task. The animal displayed fear towards people, and the situation was complicated by the rising water level due to the tide. Even a kayak crew attempting to get closer failed to approach the frightened dog.

How the bait worked

In this situation, the Denmead Drone search and rescue team proposed using a drone with an unusual "payload" — a sausage was attached to it. The drone flew over the animal, attracting its attention with the distinctive smell of food.

The plan proved effective. Hungry Millie, guided by the scent, followed the bait and successfully made it out of the bog to a safer area.

Comment from the operation leader

Team leader Chris Taylor described the idea as unusual but effective. According to him, rescuers do not rule out using this method again if they find themselves in similar circumstances. At the same time, Chris Taylor emphasised that every search operation requires an individual approach.
