Critical close approach in orbit

The Russian military satellite "Kosmos-2612" approached the commercial radar craft ICEYE-X36 to a distance of just 26 metres. This satellite belongs to the Finnish-American company ICEYE.

This incident was reported by space populariser Georgy Trishkin. According to him, a distance of less than one kilometre between crafts is considered critical.

Craft specifications and purpose

ICEYE-X36 is capable of obtaining radar images of the Earth regardless of the time of day or the presence of clouds. ICEYE's technologies are used in cooperation with Ukraine, specifically for reconnaissance tasks. However, there is no precise data on whether this specific satellite transmits information to the Ukrainian side.

Expert risk assessment

Georgy Trishkin noted that a direct attack on the ICEYE-X36 craft could be regarded as an attack on the property of the US Department of Defense. At the same time, the expert considers an accidental collision unlikely, as both satellites are under control. Despite this, he warned of increasing risks.
