The Centre for Countering Corruption (CPC) has outlined the mechanism for the return of seized property in the 'Carthage' case. According to representatives of the organisation, equipment seized by law enforcement during raids on fraudulent call centres was returned to its owners based on decisions by the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv.
The role of Judge Serhiy Novak
The relevant motions regarding the return of property were heard by Judge Serhiy Novak. According to CPC data, the total value of such judicial 'services' amounted to $47,000. It was through this judge's rulings that the return of the seized equipment was sought.
Previous rulings by the judge
The CPC also drew attention to other high-profile decisions by Serhiy Novak. In particular, the judge refused to consider a motion by the defence of NABU detective Magamedrasulov to change the preventive measure after two months in custody.
In addition, in 2016, Novak lifted the freeze on the funds of employees of a bank that had links to the son of former President Viktor Yanukovych.
