In the United States, a project aimed at detecting the illegal use of federal funds has officially launched. President Donald Trump announced that citizens will be able to receive financial compensation for providing data that leads to the filing of criminal cases against those suspected of fraud.
The total budget for this initiative is $25 million. The programme was presented on 20 October at the White House, where Vice President JD Vance was present. The main objective is to detect the illegal acquisition of funds from the federal budget.
Priority areas for scrutiny will include healthcare programmes, elderly care facilities, childcare institutions, and other social institutions funded by the state.
For example, if a company or organisation submits invoices for services that were not actually performed, any individual with evidence of this fact can contact federal authorities. If the information is verified, the whistleblower is entitled to receive a reward.
Reports can be submitted via the specially created government portal fraud.gov. Anonymous submissions are permitted; however, to actually receive a monetary payment, the complainant must provide contact details.
According to the Department of Justice, standard payments will range from $10,000 to $30,000. The decision on awarding a reward will be made after charges are filed against the suspects, without necessarily waiting for a final verdict.
Separately, Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of providing whistleblowers with 1% of the amount of fraud detected. It remains unclear how this percentage component will be combined with the fixed limit of $30,000.
During the official presentation, the authorities highlighted an example of whistleblower activity. They specifically noted 24-year-old blogger Nick Shirley, who previously published a high-profile investigation into suspected abuses of state subsidies in the network of childcare centres in the state of Minnesota.
The White House stated that the blogger will receive a reward of $10,000. It is worth noting that not all of Shirley’s public accusations were confirmed, although investigations into large-scale fraud schemes involving social benefits are indeed ongoing in the state.
The government emphasises that the new programme is exclusively aimed at detecting financial crimes. It does not provide payments for any complaints or denunciations. The mere fact of submitting information about potential violations does not guarantee the receipt of monetary compensation.
