NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte shared his view on the future of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which began in February 2022. On the Dutch talk show Pauw & De Wit, he was asked whether anyone could win in this conflict. The NATO leader responded that he considered such a scenario unlikely.
«Я не думаю, що це дуже ймовірно. Такі війни завжди закінчуються мирною угодою, яка часто є своєрідним компромісом» (I do not think that is very likely. Such wars always end with a peace deal, which is often a sort of compromise), Rutte emphasised.
Despite hopes for peace, the alliance chief stressed the need to remain vigilant. He explained that the Russian threat is not currently manifesting directly on Europe's borders, as a significant portion of Russian military forces is engaged in the war against Ukraine. However, Rutte warned that after the end of hostilities, Russia will have access to a large military potential, which will create new challenges for the continent's security.
«Ми мріємо про той час, коли все це закінчиться» (We dream of the time when all this will end), he added.
In addition to discussing the military situation, Mark Rutte touched on the topic of diplomatic relations. He expressed "huge admiration" for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and noted that both leaders maintain weekly consultations.
The NATO Secretary General also noted that it is important for US President Donald Trump and Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to maintain "good relations".
