Assessment of prospects for joining the alliance

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio hinted that Ukraine will not become a NATO member in the coming years. He considers the position of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to be the main barrier to this.

This was reported by Radio Free Europe journalist Alex Raufoglu on the social network X. According to his sources, Rubio called Ukraine's NATO membership as a security guarantee option "unrealistic in the short term" (нереалістичним у короткостроковій перспективі).

Reaction of European diplomats

Rubio claims that Putin "would never have agreed to this" (ніколи б не погодився з цим).

Furthermore, according to Raufoglu, European diplomats left the discussions with the impression that Rubio does not believe Putin will agree to any deal on Ukraine before spring 2027.
