The implementation of a specialised robotic surgical complex for performing ultra-complex surgeries in the Armed Forces of Ukraine is planned by the end of 2026. The initiative, known as the Da Vinci project, is the result of cooperation between Ukrainian military medics and the US charity foundation Revived Soldiers Ukraine.

Roman Bochkala provided details on the implementation of the initiative on his Facebook page. He noted that one of the key participants in this process is Kostiantyn Humenyuk, who previously headed the surgical direction in the AFU.

The role of medical leadership and training

Kostiantyn Humenyuk, who recently took up the post of head of the Medical Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, plays an important role in the development of this initiative. During a business trip to a hospital in the US state of Illinois, he underwent training in operating the Da Vinci robotic system.

Cooperation with the US charity foundation Revived Soldiers Ukraine, which supports assistance to Ukrainian military personnel, made the implementation of this technical project possible.

Prospects for the development of military medicine

Work is ongoing in Ukraine to strengthen the potential of military medicine. The introduction of modern technologies is one of the important directions, as it will allow for the performance of complex surgical interventions and increase the chances of saving wounded servicemen.

Da Vinci robotic systems enable surgeons to perform complex operations using special instruments and high-definition cameras. Such technologies can ensure high precision of movements and expand the capabilities of minimally invasive surgery, which is of particular importance for treating injuries sustained at the front, which often require complex and multi-stage treatment.

Project status and next steps

The team of the charity foundation "Battalion Volunteer" expressed hope that the Da Vinci project will be completed within the planned timeframe. It is believed that further cooperation between military medics and charity organisations will allow for the implementation of other important initiatives.

At the same time, the specific launch dates of the complex, its installation location, and details of further use require separate confirmation. The introduction of such equipment could become an important step towards strengthening the capabilities of the AFU Medical Forces.

It was previously reported that the Central Military Clinical Hospital is preparing to implement the Da Vinci robotic surgical system, valued at approximately $2 million, provided by the Revived Soldiers Ukraine foundation. According to Kostiantyn Humenyuk, 11 military surgeons have already undergone training, and after the completion of the operating room renovation, they plan to begin the first interventions. In the long term, medics intend to apply robotic surgery not only for planned treatment but also for complex combat injuries — an experience that does not yet exist in the world.
