Detection of psychoactive substances in mother and child

The local prosecutor's office in Elbląg announced on 20 October the start of an investigation into a case where traces of narcotic substances were detected in the body of a newborn and its 33-year-old mother. The incident occurred in one of the city's hospitals, where medical staff noticed the patient's unusual condition after her hospitalisation.

Law enforcement officials stated that the woman's condition upon admission to the hospital raised suspicions among medical staff regarding her possible use of psychoactive substances. This assumption was confirmed after toxicological analyses were conducted. Experts detected so-called new psychoactive substances in both the mother's blood and her newborn's body.

Investigation progress and prosecutor's office measures

The main objective of the investigation is to establish whether the woman could have exposed the newborn to a direct danger to life or serious harm to health. An appropriate expert assessment has been ordered to accurately evaluate the consequences of the detected substances' impact on the newborn's body.

In addition, the prosecutor's office conducted searches in the hospital room and at the woman's place of residence. During these measures, medical documentation was seized for further review. Currently, the investigators' official statement does not contain final expert conclusions regarding the specific impact of narcotic substances on the child's health.

Future of the newborn

Information about the discovered circumstances has been passed to the family court. This body is to make a decision regarding the child's future. At present, the newborn is under medical supervision in the hospital.
