Voting on the strategic agreement

Greenland's legislative bodies have officially confirmed an agreement with the United States and Denmark, which provides for strengthening the American military presence in the Arctic region. This initiative was implemented following prolonged pressure from US President Donald Trump, who sought to increase Washington's control over the strategically important island.

Terms and voting results

According to Associated Press, 16 members of parliament voted in favour of the document, while seven abstained. The agreement, signed in September by Donald Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and the head of the Greenlandic government Jens-Frederik Nielsen, contains several key provisions:

  • the creation of two new US military facilities;
  • the expansion of the capacity of the existing Pituffik base;
  • the possibility of deploying components of the "Golden Dome" missile defence system.

Preserving sovereignty and next steps

The document clearly establishes the preservation of Danish sovereignty over Greenland, as well as the right of local residents to self-determination. It is specified that military cooperation will continue even if Greenland gains independence.

The document is currently awaiting review by the Danish parliament. Discussions are scheduled for November, with a final vote to take place on 19 November. The agreement will enter into force only after all necessary parliamentary procedures are completed in both countries.
