On 14 October, an event took place on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York that became a symbol of international support for Ukraine. Before the start of the performance of Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Macbeth', the theatre's ensemble performed the State Anthem of Ukraine.

Address to the audience

Peter Gelb, general manager of the Metropolitan Opera, addressed those present, asking them to stand to honour the struggle of the Ukrainian people for freedom and independence.

Hundreds of audience members rose from their seats. Part of the audience listened to the anthem with their hands over their hearts, and after the performance, they applauded while standing.

Theatre's stance on the war

This is not the first step towards supporting Ukraine by the New York venue. Since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion, the Metropolitan Opera has consistently demonstrated its solidarity with Ukraine. Previously, the theatre had already terminated contracts with performers who expressed support for the Kremlin, and it continues to take a principled stance on the international opera stage.

The performance of the anthem in New York became another vivid example of cultural solidarity and a reminder to the international audience of the struggle of Ukrainians against Russian aggression.
