Cyberattack on the Italian Chamber of Deputies: Prime Minister's email hacked

Large-scale cyberstrike on parliamentary infrastructure

In recent days, the information systems of the Italian Chamber of Deputies have suffered a hacker attack. The perpetrators managed to penetrate the network of the lower house of parliament, leading to the compromise of email inboxes belonging to a significant number of elected representatives. Among the victims was the email address of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

These events were reported by the Italian news agency ANSA. According to sources, the incident covered the entire IT system of the parliament, although technical specialists are keeping the situation under control.

Reaction from the Prime Minister's office

Representatives of the government head's office confirmed that hackers did indeed gain access to Meloni's email account. However, it was noted that this does not concern the official email used by the Prime Minister for formal government correspondence, but rather another resource.

The Chamber of Deputies denies the existence of an emergency situation. "This issue does not have the character of an emergency – and it arises every day," sources in parliament emphasised.

Protective measures and threat context

It is known that all necessary protective measures were taken, including in cooperation with the National Cybersecurity Agency (ACN). In accordance with established practice, these actions may involve the temporary disconnection of certain functions of information systems.

In addition, it emerged that a deterioration of the situation has been observed over the past few days: similar attempts at attacks and pressure on information systems have been recorded against other national, European, and international institutions.
