On 2 November, a mass cyberattack was recorded in four European countries — Belgium, Luxembourg, Estonia and Sweden — which affected the infrastructure of dozens of retail outlets. The primary target of the attacks was the cold chain management systems in stores.

Damages and scale of destruction

In Belgium, well-known chains Carrefour, Delhaize, as well as the Ikea hypermarket, reported equipment malfunctions. According to one of the establishments, the cost of the damages is estimated at 60,000 euros. Local media published images showing empty shelves in some of the supermarkets that suffered the attack.

A similar situation arose in Luxembourg, where the Delhaize chain was affected, and in Estonia, where Selver stores came under attack. Selver representatives clarified that the attackers gained access to the computer that directly controls the refrigeration system in the stores.

Recommendations for product safety

The Belgian Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain emphasised the need for independent monitoring of equipment status. Establishments affected by the cyberattack must independently check the temperature in refrigerators and freezers to prevent product spoilage.
