Real income from viral content

Ukrainian performers often face a gap between expectations and actual financial results from internet popularity. As showman and singer Uncle Zhora noted in an interview with the "Ranok vdoma" (Morning at Home) programme, even a significant number of YouTube views does not guarantee high profits. According to his estimates, the average income per million views is around $1,000, although rates may currently be even lower.

The discussion about the financial aspects of a music career arose after the hosts mentioned the "Vidminemo plany" (Let's Cancel the Plans) clip, which has garnered 14 million views. The artist explained the payment mechanics:

«Десь у середньому мільйон переглядів — це в районі тисячі у. є. Плюс-мінус. Зараз оплата навіть ще менша»

(Somewhat on average, a million views is in the region of a thousand US dollars. Plus or minus. Now the payment is even less)

The impact of geography and market

Uncle Zhora emphasised that the payout amount is formed under the influence of several factors: the country from which the video is watched, the total number of views, and other parameters. Monetisation in Ukraine is significantly less profitable than foreign markets.

Comparing the situation in different regions, the singer noted:

«В Америці багато артистів заробляють великі кошти з монетизації. У нас це просто, знаєте, на пиво, як то кажуть, додатковий заробіток. Але теж приємний бонус. Але треба, щоб були мільйони переглядів»

(In America, many artists earn large sums from monetisation. For us, it is simply, you know, for beer, as they say, extra earnings. But it is also a pleasant bonus. But you need to have millions of views)

Costs of music production

Apart from the income side, the showman drew attention to the significant financial investments required to create a music product. Even a very popular clip does not necessarily bring the performer a noticeable profit, as the production of songs and videos requires large sums of money.

Uncle Zhora summarised that musical activity should not be viewed exclusively as a tool for earning:

«Музика — це не заробіток, це дорога цяцька. Ви просто граєтеся. Той, хто пробував співати і співає, той знає, що це дорого»

(Music is not earnings, it is an expensive toy. You are just playing around. Those who have tried singing and are singing know that it is expensive)
