Transition to the digital environment

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has decided to cease traditional broadcast transmission of three of its media projects. The changes affect the television channels BBC Three and BBC Scotland, as well as the radio station Radio 4 Extra.

However, these projects will not disappear entirely. The television channels will continue to operate online via the iPlayer platform, while the Radio 4 Extra station will be available exclusively through the BBC Sounds audio service.

Financial goals and the scale of savings

These steps are driven by the implementation of a large-scale cost-cutting programme. The corporation's management has set itself the task of saving £500 million over the next two years. At the current exchange rate, this amount is equivalent to approximately $670 million.

Impact on staffing

The reorganisation entails significant changes to the company's personnel policy. It is planned to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs, which amounts to almost one-tenth of the BBC's total workforce.

The first measures are already being implemented in the BBC News news department. The first wave of redundancies has begun here, under which approximately 550 staff positions are expected to be eliminated.
