The Ukrainian experimental satellite OBRIA NANO has successfully entered orbit and begun operations. The launch took place on 1 October 2026 as part of the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission. This was announced by the Danish company GomSpace, which is implementing the project jointly with the Ukrainian entity HIMERA.

Technical checks and strategic goals

The spacecraft is currently undergoing its planned phase of technical checks. The data obtained during the testing will serve as fundamental material for the further development of the full-fledged Ukrainian satellite communication system OBRIA.

Satellite control is to be carried out with the participation of a Ukrainian operator. The main goal of OBRIA NANO is to verify the technological solutions necessary for building a reliable proprietary network. Implementing this project will allow Ukraine to reduce its dependence on foreign service providers in the communications sector.

Comments from project leaders

HIMERA co-founder and CEO Mysha Rudomynskyi emphasised that placing the unit in orbit is not only a standalone technological achievement but also an important stage in forming the country's independent communication infrastructure. In his words, in the long-term perspective, creating a proprietary satellite network is set to strengthen Ukraine's strategic security.

GomSpace head Carsten Drachmann highlighted the significance of the partnership with HIMERA. He noted that joint work would contribute to accelerating the development of Ukraine's independent communication means and strengthening the state's security in the future.

Network development prospects

The next stages of the project envisage the formation of a full-fledged satellite constellation. It is expected that its coverage will encompass the entire territory of Ukraine and complement the operations of European satellite networks.

In addition, developers plan to establish the production of satellites and ground communication equipment directly on Ukrainian territory.

It is worth noting that Ukraine also plans to expand satellite communication capabilities for the defence sector with the participation of Finnish technology companies Nokia and ICEYE. The parties signed a document that opens up the prospect of creating a proprietary secure satellite communication system.
