Strike on Surgut: Expert explains how attack will impact Russian gas infrastructure

The strategic significance of the Surgut Gas Condensate Stabilisation Plant for the Russian economy explains why this specific facility became a target for Ukrainian long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. Roman Svitlan, a reserve Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and instructor pilot, noted that the strike on the facility in Western Siberia could have serious consequences for the operation of Russia's oil and gas industry, as the plant is directly involved in the preparation of hydrocarbon raw materials.

The role of the facility in the energy supply chain

The Surgut Gas Condensate Stabilisation Plant specialises in processing gas condensate — a mixture of hydrocarbons that is separated during natural gas extraction. According to the expert, the output of such facilities is significant for the functioning of Russian oil and gas infrastructure and energy resource transportation processes.

«Це заводи, які виробляють продукцію, що важлива для прокачування основних потоків газу» ("These are plants that produce products important for pumping the main gas flows"), explained Roman Svitlan. He added that the relevant substances are used in technological processes associated with the operation of equipment under high pressure and specific temperature regimes.

The expert emphasised that damaging such facilities is capable of creating serious obstacles for production processes. However, the actual impact on gas transportation will depend on the nature of the damage inflicted, the availability of reserve capacities, and the facility's ability to restore operations.

Technical challenges of long-range strikes

Separately, Svitlan drew attention to the technical aspects of using long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. A flight to targets located thousands of kilometres from the border can last for dozens of hours, leading to significant consumption of the device's resources specifically for covering the distance.

Therefore, developers and military personnel must carefully weigh the balance between flight range, fuel capacity, and combat payload mass. For the successful destruction of objects in the deep rear of Russia, it is important not only the technical equipment of the drones but also the ability to overcome the Russian air defence system.

According to the specialist's assessment, Ukrainian forces are employing tactics to distract Russian air defence from the main strike drones. «Головне правильно його донести і влучити» ("The main thing is to deliver it correctly and hit the target"), Svitlan concluded, commenting on the capabilities of striking Russian industrial objects.

Prospects for Russian energy

The oil and gas industry is of great importance to the Russian economy, meeting both domestic needs and energy resource exports. Therefore, attacks on facilities involved in the extraction and processing of hydrocarbons can create additional risks for production chains. Damaging such objects makes it possible to influence important industrial processes far beyond the areas of direct combat operations.

At the same time, claims about a possible halt in gas flows require confirmation with specific data on the damage and its impact on technological processes. The fact of an attack does not mean an automatic cessation of gas transportation.

The strike on the facility in Surgut demonstrates that geographical remoteness no longer guarantees complete inaccessibility for Russian industrial objects. The scale of the actual consequences will depend on the nature of the damage, the duration of repairs, and Russia's ability to compensate for the loss of capacity.

It was previously reported that the Donald Trump administration is considering the possibility of resuming European purchases of Russian gas and its transit through Ukraine as one of the potential elements of a peace agreement. According to The New York Times, US representatives discussed this idea with Ukrainian and European officials, but in Europe there are fears that this will strengthen the Kremlin's economic position. Currently, it is only a discussion of a possible scenario, not an agreed arrangement.
