On 25 October, automatic stations recorded a temporary exceedance of fine dust standards in two cities in Kyiv Oblast. Experts explain the causes and advise on how to protect health.

Authorities in Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Sharjah restricted access to the coastline following an incident involving an oil tanker in the Persian Gulf.

On Sunday, 25 October, residents of Brovary and Bila Tserkva faced a temporary deterioration in the environmental situation. Automated monitoring systems recorded that the concentration of fine particulate matter in the atmosphere exceeded established standards. However, according to monitoring data, pollution levels have already begun to decrease, and the radiation background in the region remains within natural limits.
As of the morning of 25 October, air purity issues were detected specifically in Brovary and Bila Tserkva. Stations included in the automated monitoring network recorded elevated levels of microscopic particles. Experts note that the dynamics indicate a trend towards improving atmospheric conditions.
In other settlements in Kyiv Oblast where observation posts are operating, no exceedances of permissible pollution levels have been recorded. Radiation safety was checked separately: gamma radiation measurements confirmed that the level corresponds to the natural background.
Monitoring of air quality in the oblast is carried out through a network of 16 automated points, including stations in the aforementioned cities. Provided the power grid operates stably, the equipment conducts measurements continuously, around the clock.
The main factor in the deterioration of air quality was fine particulate matter — a collection of microscopic solid and liquid particles suspended in the air. Depending on their diameter, these particles (specifically PM10 and PM2.5 fractions) can penetrate the respiratory tract, causing irritation of the mucous membranes.
The Kyiv Oblast Military Administration previously explained similar phenomena by the influence of weather conditions. High humidity, cloud cover, and weak vertical air mixing contribute to the accumulation of pollutants near the ground surface. Conversely, wind and precipitation can help clear the atmosphere under certain circumstances.
Additional sources of air quality deterioration may be the consequences of Russian shelling: fires, smoke, and infrastructure destruction.
Until the situation stabilises, experts advise residents of Brovary and Bila Tserkva to stay indoors whenever possible. It is recommended to keep windows in premises closed and avoid prolonged walks outdoors. Experts also remind of the importance of hydration: it is advisable to consume an adequate amount of water.
If household air purifiers are available, they can be switched to the maximum mode, if provided for in the manufacturer's instructions. Particular caution is required for elderly people, children, and patients with chronic respiratory diseases, as dust can exacerbate their symptoms and worsen their well-being.
Meanwhile, in Kyiv itself, as of 08:00 on 25 October, the overall air quality level was assessed as good. However, in the "Turetske mistschechko" area, indicators are spiking. It is worth noting that figures may vary in different districts of the capital and the oblast due to the specifics of local weather conditions and the presence of pollution sources.
