Tactical characteristics of the new weapon
Ukraine is discussing the potential danger posed by the new Russian Filin missile. According to data released by the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR), the projectile reaches a speed of up to 800 km/h. Its range is 1,200 km, and the warhead mass is up to 100 kg.
A key feature of the Filin is its ability to fly at extremely low altitudes. This tactic significantly complicates the task of detecting and intercepting the missile by air defence systems. In terms of speed, manoeuvrability, and warhead power, the new development outperforms the jet-powered versions of Geran drones.
Expert assessment
Serhiy Beskrestnov (Flash), an advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, highlights the advantages of such missile systems compared to unmanned aerial vehicles.
«Для їх запуску не потрібні спеціальні майданчики, багато з них можна застосовувати з вертольотів і БПЛА. Головне — їх можна виробляти з російських комплектуючих» (No special launch pads are required for their deployment; many of them can be used from helicopters and UAVs. The main point is that they can be manufactured using Russian components), he stated.
Volunteer Serhiy Sternenko expressed doubts about the readiness of the Ukrainian Air Force command to effectively repel mass strikes using such missiles.
