Four dead and two injured in critical condition

A tragedy occurred at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon. Preliminary data indicates that four people were killed in the shooting. Two other victims—a student and an adult—are in critical condition in hospital.

Among the dead are three children aged 5, 8, and 11, as well as a 54-year-old teacher. The incident was reported by local public broadcaster OPB and the Associated Press agency.

Timeline of events

The first reports of the incident reached the police at 12:59 local time on 15 October. Initially, witnesses reported shots fired at a vehicle near the educational institution. Subsequently, law enforcement received information about an armed individual who had entered the building.

Police arrived at the scene approximately three minutes after receiving the call. By the time they arrived, the shooter had already been neutralised.

Shooter killed by witness

According to the Associated Press, the suspected shooter was 16 years old. He entered the school, firing at the locked doors. The teenager died at the scene. Preliminary information suggests he was shot by an armed witness who intervened before the police arrived.

Authorities' response and evacuation

During the police operation, the educational institution was locked down. Law enforcement officers searched the premises and evacuated the children. Local authorities organised a special reunification point at a church for students to meet their parents.

More than 400 children attend Silver Rail Elementary, ranging from kindergarten pupils to fifth graders. Following the tragedy, the Bend-La Pine school district announced the cancellation of classes and events for the following day.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek stated that she is monitoring the development of the situation. The motives for the attack and any possible connection between the teenager and the school have not yet been officially established. Law enforcement continues the investigation and is determining the circumstances of the tragedy.
