Confirmation of Washington's position

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated during a press conference in Oslo that the United States of America has promised to provide Ukraine with "potent" security guarantees. According to the head of state, the level of these commitments corresponds to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Alliance.

As Zelensky emphasised, the American side confirmed the need to establish "strong" guarantees for Ukraine's defence. He added that all relevant proposals have already been integrated into the document.

Next steps

According to the president's information, Witkoff will hand the document to the Russian side during his visit to Russia. After this, as Zelensky noted, Ukraine expects to receive a response from Moscow within one day.

Negotiation context

Previously, Volodymyr Zelensky reported that the US demands the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donbas in exchange for security guarantees. However, during his latest address, the president did not clarify whether this condition remains in force at the current stage of negotiations.
