The Russian side has implemented significant changes to the design of Gerbera-2 drones. The aircraft have been fitted with a combined fragmentation, high-explosive, and incendiary warhead weighing approximately 10 kilograms. In addition to the main charge, the drone is equipped with an extra soft plastic tank filled with an incendiary mixture, which is positioned behind the primary warhead.

Change in tactical purpose

According to an assessment by the publication Militarnyi, this configuration may be intended to cause fires at impact sites. The new modification could be used to attack critical infrastructure facilities and storage premises.

Previously, drones of the Gerbera family typically carried warheads weighing between 4 and 10 kg, depending on the range of use. The base version of the aircraft usually had warheads weighing up to 5 kg.

Technical features of the new modification

The Gerbera-2 is an enlarged version of the multi-purpose Gerbera drone. This aircraft was first detected over Ukrainian territory in early August 2026.

The key difference in the new drone is its engine. Available data suggests it is a unit with a working volume of approximately 275 cubic centimetres, which is half the engine of the Shahed strike drone (known in the Russian Federation as Geran-2). The production of such motors for Russian UAVs is likely organised at the Izhevsk Motorcycle Plant.

The Gerbera-2 also features a significantly enlarged fuel tank, with a capacity reaching 63 litres. For comparison, the base version of the Gerbera had a tank volume of only 10 litres, and additional soft tanks could be used to extend its range.

Equipment and detection outside Ukraine

Depending on the configuration, drones of this series may be equipped with optical cameras, protected satellite navigation, and mesh modems for transmitting video feeds and operator commands. It is publicly known that the new drones use a 12-channel jam-resistant satellite navigation antenna called Kometa.

In addition to its use against Ukraine, a modified Gerbera-2 was detected in Poland, on the Baltic Sea coast near the settlement of Rusynovo. Inside the aircraft, a fragmentation and high-explosive warhead weighing approximately 4 kg with a detonator was found.

Russian forces continue to adapt drones that previously served as decoys. Specifically, Gerberas have been recorded carrying explosive devices, and there have been attempts to install air-to-air missiles on Shaheds. The full list of possible configurations for the Gerbera-2 is currently unknown due to the relative novelty of this aircraft.
