AI millionaires complain about loneliness and loss of life purpose
Employees and founders of artificial intelligence companies who have earned tens of millions of dollars in recent years are facing a sense of emptiness, loneliness and guilt. In Silicon Valley, this phenomenon is called sudden wealth syndrome 2.0.
According to investor Didi Das, over the past five years, approximately 10,000 employees and founders of OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Nvidia and Meta have acquired wealth exceeding $20 million. At the same time, the investor claims that some of them have begun to lose a sense of purpose in their professional activities.
The problem is not limited to the rapid change in financial status. These specialists have earned significant income thanks to technologies that raise concerns due to their potential impact on the labour market. As a result, some of them find it difficult to discuss their own success with friends and acquaintances. Communication is gradually becoming concentrated within a circle of people with a similar level of wealth.
This forms a separate social environment in which the children of wealthy industry representatives grow up. According to the described observations, they may have limited experience interacting with the everyday lives of people outside this circle.
The term “sudden wealth syndrome” was used during the dot-com boom. However, the current wave of enrichment has an additional factor: the technologies that ensured the financial success of their creators are simultaneously perceived by part of society as a potential threat to employment.
According to Forbes, there are 86 billionaires in the world whose wealth is linked to the artificial intelligence sector. Their combined capital is estimated at $2.9 trillion.
Reactions to sudden enrichment vary: some try to change their lifestyle, while others invest in secure shelters in case of emergencies. At the same time, the cited estimates and testimonies do not mean that psychological difficulties are typical for all wealthy employees of the AI industry.
