US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made a categorical statement about the vital role of American financial support in preserving Ukraine as an independent state. According to him, without the billions of dollars provided by Washington, modern Ukraine simply would not exist.
Commenting on the current situation, Rubio emphasised the direct link between the country's survival and the resources provided by the United States. He stressed that this support had been critically important not only under the previous president but also in the current administration.
«Але давайте будемо дуже чітко розуміти: сьогодні не було б жодної України, якби не допомога, яку Сполучені Штати надавали Україні в обсягах мільярдів доларів - починаючи від адміністрації Байдена і продовжуючи через цю адміністрацію також» (But let us be very clear: there would be no Ukraine today if it were not for the assistance that the United States has provided to Ukraine in the billions of dollars - starting with the Biden administration and continuing through this administration as well), the head of the US Department of State emphasised.
Rubio added that it was thanks to these funds that Ukraine was able to stand up to a much larger neighbour. He noted that Ukrainian soldiers «абсолютно дуже хоробро боролися за свою країну і робили надзвичайні речі завдяки наданій їй допомозі» (fought for their country with absolute great courage and did extraordinary things thanks to the assistance provided to them).
The Secretary of State also mentioned the initial predictions that anticipated the rapid collapse of Ukrainian sovereignty. In his view, reality turned out to be different, and the country has continued to exist for almost five years.
«А ми вже наближаємося до п’яти років. І значною мірою це заслуга бійців в Україні, їхньої мужності та того, як наполегливо вони борються» (And we are already approaching five years. And to a large extent, this is due to the fighters in Ukraine, their courage, and how persistently they fight), he concluded.
Thus, Marco Rubio combined the recognition of the key role of American aid in security with respect for the combat qualities of the Ukrainian military, who have managed to hold out much longer than experts predicted at the beginning of the conflict.
