Lithuania is changing its approach to staffing its armed forces. From 2032, the country plans to return to general military service.

Decision at the highest level

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda announced this, confirming that the relevant decision was adopted by the country's Defence Council.

«Ми ухвалили рішення, що загальний призов почне діяти з 2032 року» (We have decided that general conscription will take effect from 2032), the head of state emphasised.

Historical context and current realities

Partial conscription in Lithuania was restored back in 2015 following the annexation of Crimea and the start of the war in the Donbas. To date, more than 5,000 young people are conscripted into the army annually.

Expansion plans and new skills

In the future, this figure is to be increased to 7,500 conscripts per year. Conscripts are planned to be trained, among other things, in drone operation.
