Budget funds directed to praise the president

US President Donald Trump personally instructed the leadership of the budget office to use taxpayer money for television advertising that praises his person and performance in office. The New York Times reports this, citing sources.

It is noted that the decision initiated the implementation of a contract worth 20 million dollars. The funds were released on 19 September, when the Office of Management and Budget transferred this amount from the funds of the Customs and Border Protection to a budget category called “Commemorative measures for the enactment of the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill Act’”.

Contract details and broadcasts

According to federal documents, on 20 September, the US Customs and Border Protection, which is subordinate to the Department of Homeland Security, concluded the relevant agreement with the marketing firm LMD from Maryland.

The advertising spots were broadcast on cable and national television channels. These include Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. The ads were also shown during football matches on Fox, as well as in news broadcasts on CBS, ABC, and NBC, specifically in the programme “Meet the Pres”, which Trump is known to watch.

Budget office lawyer Mark Paolletta and White House lawyer Will Sharf confirmed the legality of using Department of Homeland Security funds for these purposes.

Criticism and White House reaction

The advertising, funded by taxpayers, sparked a wave of criticism from Democrats and even some Republicans. Politicians consider this a likely violation of federal laws that prohibit using taxpayer money “for the purpose of publicity or propaganda”.

The White House called these spots public service announcements and stated their appropriateness, as they do not contain a “call to action” to vote for any candidate. Some aides also emphasised that Trump is not currently running for any elected office.

Cost and content of the spots

So far, at least four advertising spots with a total cost of approximately 5.5 million dollars have been released, and this amount is expected to increase.

In one of them, footage featuring Donald Trump was accompanied by the song “Love Me” by performer Christian Berisha, known by the pseudonym JMSN. The artist himself spoke out against the use of his composition. Trump says off-camera: “America will never become a communist country”.

Another spot was identical to a video from Trump’s 2024 election campaign, in which “villains” whom the president considers his enemies are condemned. The use of materials created during the Republican’s political campaign provided additional grounds for criticism from those who disagree with the White House’s claim that the spots are simply public service announcements.
