Main theory: jammers and air defence
The Baku-Grozny flight encountered serious malfunctions related to GPS failure. The full transcript of communications between the crew and the air traffic controller indicates that drone jammers, activated due to a drone attack, may have disrupted the aircraft's navigation systems. Problems began as soon as the airliner descended for landing: GPS was disabled, and the controller lost "radar contact".

At 08:12, the crew reported a new failure — "bird strike in the cockpit". However, an explosion occurred nearby, and data suggests that the aircraft may have been hit by air defence systems. Presumably, the crew mistook damage from warhead fragments for a bird strike.

Timeline of events

• 07:36–08:10: The crew repeatedly attempted to land under conditions of GPS failure and lack of communication with the controller. The landing was carried out virtually blind.
• 08:12: Report of signal loss and "bird strike", which coincided with an explosion in the Naur district, where military units equipped with air defence systems are located.
• 08:16–08:18: The airliner lost control; the crew reported hydraulic system failure.

What is known about the incident site
The incident occurred over an area with military infrastructure. Objects equipped with air defence systems are located near the flight path.

Crew actions
Immediately after the explosion, the crew requested weather data for other airports, including Mineralnye Vody and Makhachkala, but due to multiple failures, controlling the aircraft became impossible.

Conclusions
The flight's problems were likely caused by external factors: active jammers used for protection against drones and the erroneous operation of Russian air defence systems. In other words, Russia effectively shot down a passenger aircraft, as had already happened with the Malaysian Boeing. 

The incident raises questions about the safety of air routes in areas with military activity.
