The anniversary of the Ilovaisk tragedy is approaching. We will not assign blame. We will only quote those who directly participated in those events. Thus, the Ilovaisk tragedy through the eyes of eyewitnesses. Pavlo Marcheniuk.

 «Про командування нічого не писатиму, бо то не справа солдата. (I will not write anything about the command, as that is not a soldier's business.)

31 липня ми прийшли у військо, а 23 серпня близько 21 вийшди в складі жвох гаубічних бвиарей у район Донецька. (On 31 July we arrived in the army, and on 23 August around 21:00 we moved out as part of two howitzer batteries towards the Donetsk area.)
Якось зібралися. 
Якось навчилися (Somehow we got together.
Somehow we learned)
Отримали гармати. Привели їх у більш-мкнш робочій стан. Тягачі їхали. (We received the guns. We brought them into a more-or-less working condition. The tractors were running.) 
В ті дні наша армія вела наступ і ми думали, що це не на довго. (Those days our army was on the offensive and we thought it would not last long.)
Характер війни до цього моменту і участь артилерії були трохи іншими. (The nature of the war up to that point and the role of artillery were somewhat different.)
Хвилювалися звичайно, накручували себе шоб недумати наперед. (We were nervous, of course, distracting ourselves so as not to think ahead.)
В машині ж це зараз в мене порядок і три чєловєка. А тоді ж полний расчєт, снаряди в ящіках, куча вєщєй, щє й запасне колесо. (In the vehicle, it is now orderly and three people. But then it was a full crew, shells in crates, a pile of gear, and even a spare wheel.)
Якось доїхали в сєктор. Піхота така нас зустрічає: а куди ви сунете? там вже два дня назад всі умотали, нікого немає. (Somehow we reached the sector. The infantry greets us like this: where are you going? everyone left there two days ago, there is no one.)
Ну ми такі, іе навєрно якісь сєпари чи фіг зна хто, вводят в заблуждєніє нас. Сунемо по полю колоною, коли туди куди мали б стати буквально через 10' починають прилітати снаряди от градів. Ну сразу понятноє дєло шо штаб нас сліл, повернули і бігои умотали. Корочє повезло нам. (Well, we were like, no, probably some separatists or who knows who, are misleading us. We would move in a column across the field, and when we were about to take up position literally 10 minutes later, shells from Grads started arriving. Well, it was immediately obvious that the staff had lost us, we turned around and ran away. In short, we were lucky.)
Покрутилися знайшли над вечір нову огнєву. (We wandered around and found a new firing position in the evening.)
Стали двома батареями. (We took up position as two batteries.)
Стали рить окопчіки які нам дуже харашо пртгоділісь. Правда копали ао всій наукє під снаряди, для наводчіка, для расчьота. (We started digging small trenches which were very useful for us. True, we dug according to all the rules for the shells, for the gunner, for the crew.)
Стемніло. 
Друга батарея получіла целі, але навестись скред ночі не змогли. (It got dark.
The second battery received targets, but could not aim in the middle of the night.)
В часті вони конєшно ізображалі з себе красавчіков, але в перший же раз вони лохонулісь. (At the unit, they of course pretended to be heroes, but the very first time they messed up.)
Наш комбат взяв їх целі. Довєрнулі гармати. Ночью ніколи не наводились даже. СОБ лейтенант тіко випустився, так шо комбат працював за всю батарею. Бігав від гармати к гарматі, наводився щітав, но ночью ми відпразювали по Іловайську нєсколько целєй. (Our company commander took their targets. We handed over the guns. At night we had never aimed even. The company commander was a lieutenant who had just graduated, so the company commander worked for the whole battery. He ran from gun to gun, aimed, calculated, but at night we fired at several targets in Ilovaisk.)
Утром взяли новую ціль должні були її відпрацювати і мінять позицію. (In the morning we took a new target, we were supposed to process it and change position.)
