Explosion in Kaspiysk port: dense column of smoke rises over Dagestan city

On the afternoon of Wednesday, 30 September, a powerful explosion was heard in the Russian city of Kaspiysk, located in the Republic of Dagestan. Local residents could see a dense column of smoke rising into the sky over the port district.

Information about the incident was published online, accompanied by photographs clearly showing significant smoke in the area where the explosion likely occurred. The post stated: «Каспійськ .. вибух у порту» (Kaspiysk .. explosion in the port).

Military significance of the facility

It is currently unknown what exactly happened on the port territory and whether this explosion was the result of a targeted attack. However, it is known that the port in Kaspiysk has repeatedly come under fire from Ukrainian drones. This is explained by the fact that it hosts military facilities of critical importance to the aggressor state.

Kaspiysk is a key base for the Russian Navy’s Caspian Flotilla. The city contains naval infrastructure necessary for the maintenance and operation of Russian ships.

Logistical and combat role

Russia has also used ships of the Caspian Flotilla to launch missile strikes on Ukrainian territory. Specifically, this refers to carriers of Kalibr cruise missiles.

In addition to its military purpose, the port infrastructure of Kaspiysk is of great importance for Russia’s transport and military logistics in the region. The port of Makhachkala also plays a significant role in this connection. It is the only Russian deep-water port on the Caspian Sea that operates year-round.
