Resilience of Ukrainian networks due to distributed architecture
Ukraine's digital ecosystem has demonstrated high resilience to Russian cyberattacks, made possible by a fundamentally decentralised approach to infrastructure organisation. At the same time, this very structure makes Russia's digital sector vulnerable, where systems are built on a centralised model, thereby increasing the damage from Ukrainian strikes.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated this in his interview, revealing key differences in the approaches of the two states to the protection and use of digital resources.
Russian attacks did not lead to loss of connectivity
The head of state emphasised that for a long time, Russia has deliberately attacked Ukrainian data processing centres and the general cyberspace. Despite the intensity of these attempts, there has been no complete shutdown of mobile connectivity and the internet in Ukraine.
Zelensky explained that decentralisation played a decisive role in maintaining the functioning of critically important systems. Such an architecture allows networks to continue operating even when individual nodes are subjected to attacks.
«Тут ми відрізняємося. Україна більш технологічно розвинена. Росіяни стільки разів атакували наші центри обробки даних, але в нас усе одно залишалися мобільний зв’язок та інтернет. Тому що в нас децентралізована й розвинена цифрова інфраструктура. Наші удари у відповідь болючіші для Росії, тому що в них усе більш централізовано» (Here we differ. Ukraine is more technologically advanced. The Russians have attacked our data processing centres so many times, but we still retained mobile connectivity and the internet. Because we have a decentralised and advanced digital infrastructure. Our counter-strikes are more painful for Russia because everything is more centralised with them), the president noted.
Difference in strategies for protecting infrastructure
The country's leader also compared approaches to the protection of critical infrastructure. According to him, Russia relies on numerous air defence systems (ADS) to protect existing facilities.
Ukraine, given the shortage of air defence assets, has chosen a different approach — decentralisation not only of data but also of other systems.
«У нас не так багато ППО — у нас дефіцит. Саме тому ми децентралізували все, не лише дані. Але ми завжди намагаємося відповідати й робимо це лише після російських атак проти нас» (We do not have that much air defence — we have a shortage. That is why we decentralised everything, not just data. But we always try to respond and do so only after Russian attacks against us), Volodymyr Zelensky concluded.
