Handover of symbols of power in Bucharest

Ukraine officially received the chairmanship of the Central European Initiative (CEI) from Romania. The solemn handover ceremony took place in the Romanian capital, Bucharest. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

Security and cessation of aggression as the main priority

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, speaking at the event, defined the main objectives that Ukraine will pursue during its chairmanship. He outlined strengthening regional security and consolidating international efforts to stop Russian aggression and establish a just and lasting peace in Europe as the primary task.

The head of the MFA emphasised that Ukraine intends to share practical experience gained during the war, as well as modern technological solutions, with partners.

«Я приїхав сюди не за співчуттям, а за співпрацею та партнерством. Ми засвоїли уроки цієї війни, маємо унікальний бойовий досвід і найсучасніші технології. Ми готові ділитися всім цим із Румунією та іншими державами – учасницями Центральноєвропейської ініціативи задля зміцнення спільної безпеки» (I came here not for sympathy, but for cooperation and partnership. We have learned the lessons of this war, we have unique combat experience and the most modern technologies. We are ready to share all of this with Romania and other states – participants of the Central European Initiative for the strengthening of common security), Sybiha stated.

The minister also stressed that stopping Russian aggression is the most important task for Europe.

«Всеосяжний, справедливий і тривалий мир є основою довгострокової безпеки та стабільності в Європі й усіх державах-членах ЦЄІ» (A comprehensive, just and lasting peace is the foundation of long-term security and stability in Europe and all CEI member states), he noted.

Specific steps for a peaceful settlement

Among the tasks for the period of Ukrainian chairmanship, Sybiha mentioned supporting the initiative's member countries in advancing peace processes. He listed achieving a full ceasefire or partial de-escalation of the conflict, the return of Ukrainian children kidnapped by Russia, the use of the "Solidarity Lanes", and the restoration of freedom of navigation in the Black Sea as specific goals.

Accelerating the enlargement of the European Union

The foreign minister identified supporting the accession process of regional countries to the European Union as an important area of activity. According to him, Ukraine is trying to use this period to facilitate the acceleration of EU enlargement. This includes, in particular, Ukraine, Moldova, and partners from the Western Balkans.

«Найближчі роки стануть роками розширення Європейського Союзу. Ми прагнемо використати наше головування для сприяння цьому процесу та його прискорення. Україна, Молдова та наші партнери із Західних Балкан посилять Європейський Союз як повноправні держави-члени» (The coming years will be years of European Union enlargement. We strive to use our chairmanship to facilitate this process and its acceleration. Ukraine, Moldova, and our partners from the Western Balkans will strengthen the European Union as full-fledged member states), Sybiha said.

Other strategic directions

In addition to security and European integration, the priorities of the Ukrainian chairmanship also include the development of regional connections, energy security, infrastructure, trade, and recovery. Ukraine plans to strengthen cooperation with partners in the fields of cybersecurity and countering disinformation.

The role of the Central European Initiative

Andrii Sybiha separately noted the significance of the Central European Initiative. According to him, it is the oldest and largest format of regional cooperation, bringing together 16 states of Central and South-Eastern Europe. The organisation promotes political dialogue, practical partnership, and European integration.
