Detention of Russian intelligence agents

Law enforcement officers in Zaporizhzhia detained two city residents suspected of preparing the murders of four Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen on the orders of Russian intelligence services. This was announced by the press services of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The head of the SBU, Major General Oleksandr Poklad, personally coordinated the special operation to expose the enemy agents. Both suspects were detained on 10 September 2026 "red-handed" while they were looking for a location for an ambush, immediately before one of the planned crimes.

The scheme for luring victims

It emerged that the Russian Federation's FSB had devised a plan to eliminate Ukrainian soldiers using social engineering. Russian intelligence officers created fake accounts on dating sites to lure military personnel to what appeared to be dates with women. A separate meeting was planned for each Ukrainian defender.

Hitmen were to wait at the meeting point. According to the enemy's plan, one of the agents was to attack the victim with a hunting knife, while the other was to record the process on a smartphone camera for a subsequent "report" to their superiors.

Recruitment and prior crimes

The FSB's task was carried out by two recruited local residents aged 18 and 19. They came to the attention of the Russian intelligence service while searching for easy ways to earn money in Telegram channels.

After recruitment, the suspects first carried out a "test" mission: they tracked a vehicle belonging to Ukrainian defenders and set it on fire. They were then given a new task — to carry out a series of contract killings. The criminals began studying locations where it would be convenient to organise an ambush, including the outskirts of the city and garage cooperatives.

Detention and seizure of evidence

It was established that to carry out their plan, the hitmen purchased a hunting knife, spare clothing, and rubber gloves. After the first murder, they planned to dispose of this "kit" and buy a new one for subsequent attempts.

During searches, smartphones containing evidence of their contacts with the FSB were seized from the detainees. Law enforcement officers also found cold weapons, a non-lethal pistol with ammunition, and a live grenade.

Legal consequences

Based on the evidence gathered, SBU investigators informed the agents of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 28 and Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. They are charged with high treason committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy under martial law conditions.

The suspects are in custody. They face a sentence of life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
