Clashes in the capital and regions

New unrest erupted in France on the evening of 31 October. Despite the relatively peaceful start to the nationwide day of protests, the situation escalated in Paris and Lyon, with law enforcement deploying tear gas.

Similar incidents were also recorded in Marseille, Rennes, and Toulouse. Arson attacks occurred in Marseille, requiring the intervention of firefighters to extinguish the fires.

Police sustained burn injuries

Protest participants threw stones, pyrotechnics, and bottles filled with flammable mixtures at representatives of the authorities. Videos that appeared online documented the moment when one of the police officers caught fire. He managed to quickly extinguish the flames on his own.

According to other reports, the clothing of other police officers also caught fire. Colleagues assisted the injured using fire extinguishers.

Scale of participation in the actions

The French Ministry of the Interior reported that approximately 320,000 people participated in the protest events across the country. Of this number, 70,000 demonstrators gathered specifically in Paris.
