GitHub is increasing server capacity due to the rapid growth in the volume of AI-generated code

The GitHub platform has faced a significant increase in load due to the widespread use of artificial intelligence for writing program code. To cope with the growth in activity, the company had to expand its computing resources by four million processor cores and add 160 petabytes of storage.

The main factor behind this load has been the proliferation of AI agents, which can independently generate code, create changes, and submit them for review by developers.

According to the data provided, the number of code changes on the platform grew sixfold over the year. In September alone, their number reached 7.4 billion.

Artificial intelligence is also gradually becoming one of the key sources of software code. Over 40% of requests to add changes to GitHub repositories are reportedly already generated by neural networks.

The growth in the number of automatically created changes requires not only additional server resources but also a review of infrastructure operating principles. GitHub had to scale its computing power, increase data storage capacity, and adapt its server systems to the new level of load.
