Phone pressure on former mayor's family

Former Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov released information about a series of phone calls directed at his 83-year-old mother. According to him, unknown individuals attempted to obtain personal data from the woman while posing as employees of state agencies.

Trukhanov emphasised that these actions have nothing to do with the Security Service of Ukraine. He is convinced that criminal schemes organised by fraud call centres are behind this.

First wave of calls in hospital

According to the former mayor, the first calls came in while his mother was receiving inpatient treatment. Unknown individuals called her personal number and began questioning her about her place of residence, as well as inquiring whether she lived with her son and who else was nearby.

«Моїй мамі, якій 83 роки і яка перебувала в лікарні, зателефонували на її особистий номер. Невідомі представилися співробітниками СБУ і почали випитувати: де вона зараз живе, чи проживає разом із сином, хто є поруч, намагаючись витягнути різну особисту інформацію» (My 83-year-old mother, who was in hospital, received a call on her personal number. Unknown individuals identified themselves as SBU employees and began questioning her: where she currently lives, whether she lives with her son, who is nearby, trying to extract various personal information), Trukhanov said.

Suspicions of opponents' involvement

Hennadii Trukhanov categorically denied the involvement of SBU employees in these actions. He stated that such methods do not correspond to the security service's operational standards.

«Я абсолютно впевнений, що це не СБУ. Вони так не працюють. Це — покидьки з шахрайських кол-центрів, діяльність яких зараз “кришують” мої політичні опоненти» (I am absolutely sure that this is not the SBU. They do not work that way. These are scoundrels from fraud call centres, whose activities are currently being "covered" by my political opponents), the former mayor added.

Second wave: calls after discharge

After Trukhanov moved his mother from the hospital to their home, the phone pressure did not stop but changed format. Calls began coming from a different number.

The former mayor said he decided to call the number back himself. After several attempts, he established contact. The interlocutors identified themselves as representatives of the State Bureau of Investigation. However, according to Trukhanov, they communicated exclusively in Russian, used profanity, and made threats.
