For those who have reached the age for a state pension, it is critically important to adhere to the established deadlines for applying to the Pension Fund of Ukraine. Under current legislation, applicants have three months, starting from the day after reaching pensionable age, to submit their application. If this period is ignored, payments will be assigned only from the date of the actual application, resulting in the loss of funds for the preceding period.
Determining the date of payment assignment
The Pension Fund clarified that an application can be submitted after the right to a pension has arisen, or in advance — no earlier than one month before retirement.
The key point is the three-month deadline. If a citizen applies to a PFSU body within this time, the pension will be assigned from the day after reaching the relevant age. If the deadline is missed, accruals will begin only from the date the documents are submitted. This means the individual will be without financial support for the entire interval between acquiring the right to a pension and the moment they finally applied to the fund.
Future pensioners should prepare the necessary documents in advance to avoid delays and loss of funds.
Methods of application and recording the date of application
A state pension can be processed in three main ways:
- in person at an office;
- via online services;
- by sending documents by post.
It is important to understand that the date of application, which is decisive for calculating deadlines, is determined depending on the chosen method:
- for an in-person visit — the day the Pension Fund body accepts the application;
- for online submission — the date the application is registered on the web portal;
- for postal submission — the date of the postmark.
These nuances must be taken into account to avoid exceeding the established three-month deadline.
Specifics of pension assignment during wartime
A special procedure for pension assignment applies to residents of territories where hostilities are ongoing or have taken place, as well as areas that were under temporary occupation. These rules apply throughout the period of martial law and for three months after its termination or cancellation.
General provisions regarding the assignment of a state pension are enshrined in Article 26 of the Law of Ukraine “On Mandatory State Pension Insurance”.
To avoid losing payments for the previous period, citizens are advised to verify their right to a pension in advance and submit documents to the Pension Fund in a timely manner.
It was previously reported that from 2026, Ukrainians will need at least 33 years of insurance record to retire at the age of 60. In 2028, this requirement will increase to 35 years. If the insurance record is insufficient, payments can be processed at the age of 63 or 65, depending on the number of accumulated years. Future pensioners are advised to check their insurance record in advance on the Pension Fund of Ukraine portal.
