US President hints at possible decision
White House chief Donald Trump told journalists that Washington is actively discussing the issue of establishing a permanent American military contingent in Poland. Responding to press questions near the residence, he expressed the view that a final decision in this direction may already have been made, despite the fact that no public announcement has yet been made.
«Ми це розглядаємо, і це може бути зроблено. Ви не знаєте, чи прийняв я рішення про створення бази, чи ні. Можливо, я його прийняв» (We are considering it, and it can be done. You do not know whether I have made a decision to create a base or not. Perhaps I have), Trump emphasised.
Prior agreements and Warsaw's position
This topic had been raised before. In September of this year, the US President again mentioned progress in negotiations regarding the placement of a permanent base, noting that information about its exact location could be disclosed in the near future.
From the Polish side, intentions were confirmed by President Karol Nawrocki, who stated the state's readiness to continue cooperation with the aim of expanding the American military presence on its territory.
Change in the format of presence on the eastern flank
Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has already submitted an official proposal to the Pentagon for the construction of a permanent American military facility. Currently, American servicemen are in Poland temporarily, on a rotational basis.
Converting the rotational contingent into a permanent base would be a significant change to the strategic format of US presence on NATO's eastern flank.
